U.S. Steel Tower
At 841 feet, the U.S. Steel Tower has been the tallest building in Pittsburgh since it was dedicated in 1971. Designed by Harrison, Abramovitz & Abbe and conceived by U.S. Steel executives as the company's world headquarters, the tower was built using the company's own specially made CORTEN weathering steel — the material that gives the building its distinctive rust-brown color, a color that deepens naturally over time rather than being painted on. Because its roof does not taper the way most skyscrapers do, it has the largest flat roof of any building of its height in the world, at a full acre. It anchors the top of our model as the tallest and most materially distinctive structure on the real skyline.
BNY Mellon Center
At 725 feet, BNY Mellon Center is Pittsburgh's second-tallest building, rounding out the model with the downtown financial district's second major silhouette. Its presence alongside the U.S. Steel Tower shows the real proportional relationship between Pittsburgh's two tallest structures rather than an exaggerated one.
Why These Two, Together
The U.S. Steel Tower represents Pittsburgh's industrial identity made literal — a skyscraper built from and named for the very material the city was famous for producing, standing as the company's own headquarters at the height of American steel manufacturing. BNY Mellon Center represents the city's later pivot toward finance and services as the steel industry declined. Together they show a downtown skyline shaped by two distinct economic eras.
How the Model Is Built
Each Pittsburgh skyline sculpture is 3D-printed in matte black with brushed gold lettering reading PITTSBURGH on the base, hand-finished, and shipped within three to five business days.
