100 North Tampa
At 579 feet and 42 stories, 100 North Tampa has been the tallest building in Tampa since its completion in 1992. It anchors downtown's skyline along the Hillsborough River and remains the building most Tampa residents picture first when asked to describe the city's silhouette. Tampa is home to 52 high-rises taller than 200 feet, 16 of which exceed 300 feet — more than any Florida city outside the Miami metro — and 100 North Tampa sits at the top of that list.
Rivergate Tower
Known locally as the "Beer Can Building" for its distinctive cylindrical shape, Rivergate Tower stands 454 feet tall at 32 stories and was completed in 1988. Designed by the architect Harry Wolf and clad in reflective glass, the tower's unusual round form has earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places — a rare distinction for a building from the 1980s, and proof that its silhouette is considered architecturally significant, not just locally nicknamed.
Why These Two, Together
100 North Tampa represents the city's early-1990s downtown growth spurt and remains the literal high point of the skyline three decades later. Rivergate Tower represents something rarer — a genuinely distinctive architectural form that broke from the standard rectangular-tower template of its era and became a beloved local landmark specifically because of its unusual shape. Together they show a skyline where height and originality both matter to how Tampa residents actually see their own downtown.
